An award-winning group of amateur musicians will be hitting the key notes as it celebrates its 21st birthday. Edinburgh Concert Band, which has 80 members from across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife, will play at the iconic Queen's Hall, Edinburgh on 6 June 2009. The band will play modern classics such as the West Side Story and The Pirates of the Caribbean theme tunes, as well as more traditional pieces such as Illyrian Dances, King across the Water and Huntingdon.
Allan Cumming, Chairman of the Band, said: 'The band is all set to put on its best ever show in celebration of the 21st anniversary. Our musicians are very talented and committed people. I am confident the show will rival that of a professional, full-time concert band. At 21, the band is stronger than ever. This celebration concert is set to be a lively and exciting one for both the audience and the band.'
Edinburgh Concert Band was formed in 1988 by city music teacher Stephen Callaghan. It was set up initially to give musical youngsters the chance to carry on playing their instruments once they had left school. Youngsters from Gracemount Secondary School will also perform Psalm and Celebration, Bolero and 80s Flashback to give them the chance to experience the band. Over the years, the membership and age range grew and there are now over 80 members who play brass , woodwind and percussion instruments at Grade 5 and above. It has won many awards and accolades over the years. Recently, around fifty members travelled to the National Concert Band Festival in Cardiff, Wales. Their performance was rated as of 'Gold' standard by the judges. The group meets on a Tuesday evening at Boroughmuir High School and is funded through membership fees and concerts.
