Reason Number 4 - Shopping in Princes Street
Princes Street - Edinburgh
Princes Street is Edinburgh's foremost shopping street and was built as part of the New Town in the late 18th Century. Although much of Princes Street has been redeveloped over the years, the New Town behind retains much of the original Georgian architecture, which is well worth a look. It is sometimes joked that the street is only half-finished: the north side of Princes Street is home to a range of shops and hotels, but the south side of the street has never been built on and opens on to the Princes Street Gardens. This large park nestles under Edinburgh Castle and provides space and peace in the city centre and is a fantastic foreground for views to the castle. It is also home to the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy.
Shopping in Princes Street
Statues, fine hotels and landmarks run the length of Princes Street and include the Walter Scott Monument where pipers are frequently heard. The Princes Mall is a contemporary mall adjacent to Waverley Station and the tourist information centre. One of the few Victorian buildings left on Princes Street is occupied by Edinburgh's traditional and luxurious department store, Jenners. Other chain stores fill Princes Street, catering to every taste.
