Reason 17 - The Royal Yacht Britannia and Leith
The Royal Yacht Britannia and Leith
Britannia was launched in 1953 and carried the Royal Family and their guests and dignitaries on 968 official voyages to the far corners of the globe. On decommissioning in 1997, Edinburgh's historic port of Leith won the competition to become the Britannia's permanent home.
Visiting the Royal Yacht Britannia and Leith
Visitors can now step on-board Britannia, and, with the help of complementary audio tours, learn the inside story of this spectacular yacht. Revisit an age before air-travel, when this yacht was the home of the royal family as they toured the globe.
The port of Leith is full of cultural influence and historic architecture. From its beginnings as Edinburgh's port over 1000 years ago, it has seen great wealth and fabulous architecture, much of which is retained. The area saw some decline and had a reputation as a typically rough-edge seaport, but in recent years has become a regenerated waterfront with massive investment. It is on the outskirts of Edinburgh and just five minutes walk from the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre, and bustling with bistros, bars and award winning restaurants.
